Battery Management System Calibration

This information applies to REDARC Manager30 and Manager Alpha Battery Management Systems, along with the RedVision Pro Display.

When first installed, after a battery replacement, or after disconnection, the system will not immediately display 100% charge. Instead, it must complete a full calibration cycle, which occurs once the battery has been fully charged. The quickest way to complete calibration is by charging from AC mains power with all loads turned off, though solar or vehicle charging can also achieve this.

Calibration time depends on the battery type, size, and charge source. Once calibration is complete, the RedVision Pro Display will show “Full” at 100%. If calibration issues occur, resetting by toggling between Storage and Touring modes may help. Firmware versions also affect whether “Calibrating” is shown on screen.

This information is applicable to the following Battery Management Systems:

  • Manager30 Battery Management System (BMS1230S3, BMS1230S3R, BMS1230S3-NA, BMS120S3R-NA, BMS1230S3R4-EU, BMS1230S3-EU, BMS1230S3R-UK, BMS1230S3-UK)
  • Manager Alpha Battery Management Systems (BMS12050-AU, BMS12075-AU, BMS12100-AU, BMS12050-NA, BMS12075-NA, BMS12100-NA, BMS12050-UK, BMS12075-UK, BMS12100-UK, BMS12050-EU, BMS12075-EU, BMS12100-EU)
  • RedVision Pro Display (DISP4300)

What does calibration look like?

When the battery is first connected, the system will start a calibration process to determine the State of Charge (SoC) of the battery. The RedVision Pro Display will show one of the symbols below.

My newly installed system doesn't have a battery percentage, is this normal? What do I need to do for it to show 100%?

This is normal, when a REDARC Manager30, 50, 75 and 100 with RedVision Pro Display is connected to a battery (whether a new install, a battery replacement, or it has simply been disconnected for another reason), it will need to learn about the battery it’s connected to. The Manager System requires a full charge cycle to display 100%.

The length of time before the battery is full and the Calibrating stage completes will depend on the type and size of the battery, and its state of charge when Calibrating commences. Calibrating will automatically finish when the Manager is satisfied that the battery is full, the state of charge and time frames will then be displayed.

What is the quickest way to get the system to calibrate?

The fastest and most effective way for the Manager to finish Calibrating is to connect it to AC mains Power (240V or 110V depending on your region) and let it charge the battery without any loads turned on. This allows the maximum charge current to flow to the battery without being used by any loads. If AC mains isn’t available, the Calibrating process will still occur from solar panels (if enough current is available for the Calibrating period) or from the vehicle (if the drive time is long enough for the Calibrating period).

How long will it take to calibrate?

The length of time before the battery is full and the Calibrating stage completes will depend on the type and size of the battery and its charge source. Calibrating will automatically finish when the Manager is satisfied that the battery is full, the state of charge and time frames will then be displayed.

What will the screen look like when the battery is fully charged?

The RedVision Pro Display will indicate 100% and ‘Full’ will be displayed as below:

The battery has been charging for hours and it's still not showing 100%?

If the charger is still in Boost or Absorption, then the battery is still charging. The system will need to be displaying “Float” in the below location to display 100% charge.

My system is in float but it's still not showing 100%, what do I do?

On the rare occasion that the unit indicates float without displaying 100%, the system will need to be forced back into boost. This can be done in System Settings, by putting the system into Storage Mode and then back into Touring Mode. This acts as a mini reset for the charge profile.

My friend's setup is showing calibrating on the screen and mine is not? Why is that?

This will be due to the firmware version of the display. Newer versions will show “Calibrating.”

The battery is charged to 100% as indicated by the battery's Bluetooth®, why hasn't it come up on the RedVision Pro Display?

Even though a battery may be charged to 100% the Battery Management System will still need to run through its own charge cycle.

The battery I have is brand new off the shelf but it's not fully charged, why is that?

Even a brand-new battery fresh off the shelf of a battery shop, may not be fully charged. This is more prevalent when it comes to lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are generally shipped and stored at between 30 and 70% as a safety precaution.
