A breakaway system is designed to automatically apply the brakes on a trailer if it accidentally disconnects from the tow vehicle. A breakaway system should be tested periodically to make sure that it operates correctly. It may also be necessary to show roadside authorities that the breakaway system operates correctly.
Test Procedure
⚠️ WARNING
Do not disconnect the tow hitch during a breakaway system test. The trailer must remain securely and mechanically connected to the tow vehicle at all times. If the tow hitch is disconnected, the trailer could move freely and unexpectedly, especially on uneven or sloped ground.
Test a breakaway system as follows:
- Connect the trailer to the tow vehicle.
⚠️WARNING
Disconnect the trailer plug to isolate the electrical connection to the tow vehicle before manually testing the breakaway system. Some unregulated breakaway systems can cause damage to vehicle wiring, devices, and/or the brake controller if tested while the trailer is electrically connected to the vehicle.
- Disconnect the trailer plug — do not disconnect the trailer hitch.
- Pull the pin out of the breakaway switch.
- Try to slowly move the vehicle forward.
- Do one of the steps that follow:
- If the trailer brakes are applied automatically, the system is working correctly. Continue to step 6.
- If the trailer brakes are not applied, or if a fault code is displayed, do not tow until the problem is resolved. Contact the manufacturer of the breakaway system for troubleshooting advice.
- Put the pin back in the breakaway switch.
- Connect the trailer plug.
- Test that the brake controller and trailer brakes operate correctly — refer to the related user manuals for instructions.
