Adjusting Maximum Output Voltage for the BCDC - the Orange Wire explained

BCDC Core and Classic chargers use the orange wire to set the maximum voltage for the selected charge profile: A (14.6V) for AGM/Gel, B (15.0V) for lead acid, H (14.2V) for heated lithium, and Li (14.2V) for lithium.

Ensure the profile matches your battery type and only use lithium with a built-in BMS.

LEDs indicate input availability (solar/vehicle) and charge stage, with Classic models using a 3-stage charge and 50A models a 4-stage charge. Solar input has priority.

This information is applicable to the following BCDC chargers:

  • BCDC Core 25A DC Battery Charger (BCDCN1225)
  • BCDC Core 40A DC Battery Charger (BCDCN1240)
  • BCDC Classic 25A DC Battery Charger (BCDC1225D)
  • BCDC Classic 40A DC Battery Charger (BCDC1240D)

The orange wire on the BCDC Classic and Core is used to configure the maximum output voltage of your charger to match your selected Charge Profile. This ensures the charging system is tailored to the battery type and installation environment, helping you maximise performance and protect your auxiliary battery.

Setting the Charge Profile

Refer to the table below to select the correct profile for your battery type and installation configuration (Cabin Install or Engine Bay Install).

Setting Maximum Voltage

Depending on the charge profile you require, connect the ORANGE wire as follows:

PROFILE A

Leave and tape over the disconnected ORANGE wire to set the Maximum voltage to 14.6 V

PROFILE B

Connect the ORANGE wire to Common Ground to set the Maximum voltage to 15.0 V.

PROFILE H

Connect the ORANGE wire to the RED wire (Input source positive) to set the Charger to Heated Lithium mode (14.2V).

PROFILE Li

Connect the ORANGE wire to the GREEN wire (LED output) to set the charger to Lithium mode (14.2V).

Important Safety Notes

  • Check the manufacturer’s data for your battery and ensure that the Maximum voltage of the Charging Profile you select does not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended maximum charging voltage. If the Maximum voltage is too high for your battery type, select another Charging Profile.
  • When using the Battery Charger to charge a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, only batteries with an inbuilt battery management system with under and over voltage protection and cell balancing are suitable.
  • The Heated Lithium (H) charging profile should only be used with lithium batteries that feature a functioning heating element. If unsure, the standard Lithium (Li) charging profile must be used. Using the wrong charging profile may damage your lithium battery.

Charge Status LEDs

The Charge Status LEDs indicate to the user which inputs are available and what stage of the charge process the Unit is currently in.

Solar and Vehicle LEDs

The Solar and Vehicle LEDs will be ON when the input is available and in use and OFF when the input is not available or not in use.

If both LEDs are ON, both input sources are available and in use.

The Dual Input In-vehicle Battery Charger uses Green Power Priority technology. This means the Unit will always supply as much power as possible from the Solar input before supplementing this with power from the Vehicle input, to the maximum output of the Unit or required by the battery at the time.

Stage LED

The Stage LED indicates the charge profile stage. With any profile selected the BCDC1225D / BCDC1240D charger will output a 3-Stage type charging profile with Boost, Absorption and Float Stages.

The BCDC1250D charger will output a 4-Stage type charging profile with Soft-Start, Boost, Absorption and Float Stages.

The table below outlines the LED sequences which indicate these stages.
